“There’s someone for everybody” goes the old matchmaker’s expression, and perhaps no words rang truer on February 9, 1863, the day that professional little person Tom Thumb (Charles Stratton) married Lavinia Warren at Grace Church, New York. (I believe that’s Lavinia’s sister Minnie Warren as Maid of Honor; and Commodore Nutt as Best Man). This little stunt, the “Fairy Wedding” by the press, lightened people’s hearts during the depths of the Civil War. We present it to you in the same spirit today.

It wasn’t just a publicity stunt, however; the two were a real couple. But even so, their boss P.T. Barnum was probably not too unhappy when the big event resulted in coverage like this:

“I love you completely, my own, my all. But above all, I love this front page coverage in Harpers!”

Becca Bernard, clown musician extraordinaire, whom four or five of you may remember from Dead End Dummy last fall, wants you to know about her Singing Telegram service, in anticipation of Valentine’s Day.  Accompanied by her trusty uke, Becca will work with you to customize an original song, which she’ll deliver at your loved one’s home or work (which, is much better I think you’ll agree, because it is more embarrassing). Becca radiates a very positive, infectious spirit (she’s a hospital clown, too) so I’d recommend her and her service not just as a gift for your Valentine or significant other, but for ANYONE you’d like to make happy for any reason whatsoever. DO IT! I’m Trav S.D., a non-paid, non-attorney spokesperson.

Here’s Der Bingle’s radio broadcast for Valentine’s Day 1948, with special guest Oscar Levant. Lots of pretty, romantical music, with the side benefit of you don’t have to look at them ugly mugs!

Many of us have seen the movie and television adaptations of Chic Young’s comic strip Blondie starring Penny Singleton and Arthur Lake. Fewer probably know that there was also a radio version which ran from 1939 through 1950. Here, towards the end of their lengthy run, is their Valentine’s Day episode from 1949:

All of us too young to have been Baby Boomers or older missed a joke in the movie Grease (1978) and its sequel (1982). The casting of veteran Hollywood character actress Eve Arden as the school principal was a clever reference to the role she was best known for by many ’til then, the title character in the situation comedy Our Miss Brooks, which aired on radio from 1948 to 1957, and on television from 1952 to 1956. On the show, Arden played a wisecracking High School English teacher.

In honor of the season, we present the 1950 Valentine’s day episode of Our Miss Brooks

One in our series of old time radio posts in celebration of Valentine’s Day.

My favorite Husband was Lucille Ball’s radio sit-com precursor to I Love Lucy, which ran on CBS from 1948 through 1951. Real life husband Desi Arnaz hadn’t yet come aboard; Lucy’s sit-com husband was played by Richard Denning. Here we have the Valentine’s Day episode from 1949.
