August 4, 5pm: Coney Island and the Birth of Burlesque
Talk included with Museum Admission. $5 for Adults, $3 for Seniors, Kids (under 12) and residents of Zip Code 11224, at the door. Free for Members of Coney Island USA!
From Little Egypt’s belly dancing to the revues in Bowery saloons to “girlie shows” to mid-century strip joints to the explosive recent resurgence, Coney Island has always been on the cutting edge of the evergreen performing art form known as burlesque. Writer/performer Trav S.D. (No Applause, Just Throw Money: The Book That Made Vaudeville Famous) takes you through the many ways Coney has contributed to burlesque history, aided and abetted by Aubrey Coletti (a.k.a “Enshara”) who will illustrate the story in dance!
I don’t think you’ll regret coming out to Coney Island on August 4 to hear this talk! in addition to our hour-long event, that day you could also catch the newly reopened New York Aquarium with its deluxe shark exhibit; the Coney Island Music Festival, which starts at 1; the Coney Island Circus Sideshow of course; Phantom Creep Theatre, showing 7 Footprints to Satan at 8:30pm; and Burlesque at the Beach at 10. And the amusement park rides. Carefully planned, you could have 14 hours of fun at a stretch, but we truly hope you can set aside an hour of that day for our event, which we vow will not be the inferior of the others in fascination or amusement.
