Century of Slapstick #9: The Gangsters

Today is the 100th anniversary of the release of the Keystone short The Gangsters, directed by Henry Lehrman. It features Roscoe Arbuckle (right, in the photo above) in one of his first Keystone roles as well as Ford Sterling (the desk sergeant), Fred Mace, Hank Mann, Al St. John, et al. In the film Mace plays a gangster and former boxer named Spike; Arbuckle is the Keystone Kop who antagonizes him by trying to steal his girl. The gang retaliates by pulling down Fatty’s pants. As the battle escalates, the gang pulls down the pants of every Kop in the police station.
