Pierre Etaix at the Film Forum
One of my happy discoveries in working on my new book Chain of Fools: Silent Comedy and Its Legacies from Nickelodeons to Youtube (Bear Manor Media, February, 2013) has been French comedy film-maker Pierre Etaix. He is often associated with Jacques Tati (for whom he assistant directed, and with whom he got his start) but his character and his style are very different.
Tonight through October the Film Forum in New York will be showing a selection of his best films – – the perfect opportunity to bring yourself up to snuff on this offbeat film-maker. The full schedule is here. He’ll be appearing there in person tonight!
If you can’t make the screening, lots of his films are on Youtube. I watched ’em all. This one is probably my favorite, and how perfectly timed for Hallowe’en (there’s more than a little Hammer Horror parody in the fantasy sequences here–very well done) . The film is called Insomnia (1961).
