Terrific news! After 27 years of ongoing restoration, Jane’s Carousel opens to the public today! You may have passed it (as I have) on your way to St. Ann’s Warehouse in DUMBO. It is officially a part of Brooklyn Bridge Park now, and will undoubtedly be a big draw to the neighborhood.
Built in 1922 and originally a part of Youngstown, Ohio’s Idora Park, the 48 horse merry-go-round is the first carousel to be listed on the National register of Historic Places. “Jane” is Jane Walentas, who purchased the park with her husband David expressly for Brooklyn Bridge Park. It’s a beautiful day to go for a spin!
Still pending: the re-installation of B & B Carousell in Coney Island — I for one can’t wait!
