Stars of the AVT #61: Sir Real
This post is one of a series profiling the hundreds of performers I’ve presented through my American Vaudeville Theatre in celebration of its 15th anniversary. Don’t miss the American Vaudeville Theatre’s 15th Anniversary ExTRAVaganza in the New York International Fringe Festival this August!
In the mid 90s, one of my good friends and cohorts was a frequenter of the alternative nightlife scene at the now-defunct Nowbar, a club owned by former child star Mason Reese. It was he who befriended the woman who is also Drag King Sir Real and brought her to us. She remains notorious in my own set as the legendary “Lobster Woman” for having performed in our burlesque production Orgy of the Dead at Surf Reality in 2001 and sticking her lobsters where the sun don’t shine, and all out without the aid of nutcrackers or melted butter. (It remains a legend to me, I’m not sure I saw her do precisely that from where I was sitting). For many years s/he produced the very successful “Reality Show” at WOW Cafe — and s/he remains very much involved in that company, as producer, designer, crew-person, and sometimes performer…a Jack (not a Jill) of All Trades.
