Today is the birthday of one of my very favorite writers (for a thousand reasons I don’t have time to enumerate this morning). I’ll just say that one of them is that he is the author of the celebrated Balloon Hoax, making him figure in the history of bunkum, in addition to his feverishly brilliant literary genius. At all events, today is the day that for around a half century a mysterious figure known only as the Poe Toaster would put flowers on Edgar Allan Poe’s grave, a gesture that mixes the author’s love of hoax and mystery with his qualities of sentimentality and morbidity. Last year, the Poe Toaster failed to show up at the Baltimore graveyard where Poe is interred. Is the person deceased or were they merely kept away last year for some reason? This year will be the test. Please write if you get news!
