Forgotten Shows of My Nonage #19: Thunderbirds

People my age or a littler older will cry “Not forgotten!’ but I have polled many people even a little younger than myself who have never seen or even heard of this show, even when they’ve seen Team America: World Police, which was largely inspired by Thunderbirds and its hallmark technique “Supermarionation”. This British children’s adventure show was produced 1965-66 but syndicated for years afterward. It concerned a family of astronaut heroes in the 21st century (a father and his five sons, each with his own different rocket ship), assisted by Lady Penelope. Its effects may look crude now, but I assure you, to a little boy in the early 1970s, it was most convincing. We post this today because we got word that the show’s co-creator Gerry Anderson passed away yesterday. And now, “Thunderbirds are Go!”:
