Stars of the AVT #51: Scotty the Blue Bunny
This post is one of a series profiling the hundreds of performers I’ve presented through my American Vaudeville Theatre in celebration of its 15th anniversary. Don’t miss the American Vaudeville Theatre’s 15th Anniversary ExTRAVaganzain the New York International Fringe Festival this August!
It’s very hard to say what Scotty the Blue Bunny is or what his act is. He’s kind of like Charo. It’s not that he says “Coochy-coochy!”, although I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that he did. It’s that his job seems to be just being who he is. Comedian? Performance artist? He’s quite good at ad libbing and saying outrageous things and mingling with an audience, which makes him a very good host. But sometimes he’s just an act, dancing, or twirling things (see above), usually on the neo-burlesque circuit.
When I first knew him (the late 90s) he was one of the stars of the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus. In 2000, I booked him for Trav S.D.’s Circus of the Insane at Surf Reality, and later for one of my burlesque shows at the same venue in 2001. These days he’s based out of San Francisco (where he doesn’t raise an eyebrow) and appears to be touring internationally. Next stop, Helsinki! That’s quite a long hop, Scotty!
